OEOSC Accredited Course: Optics Surface Inspection Workshop

SPIE PHOTONICS WEST – Tuesday, 20 January 2026 – 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM EDT

Understanding the correct way to inspect optical surfaces is one the most important skills anyone working with or around optics can have, including technicians, material handlers, engineers, managers, and buyers. While understanding the specifications is the first step, learning how to actually perform the inspection is just as important. This is an OEOSC Accredited Course. Learn more and register here.

OEOSC Accredited Course: Understanding Scratch and Dig Specifications

SPIE PHOTONICS WEST – Tuesday, 20 January 2026 – 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM EDT

This course provides attendees with an understanding of the source of ambiguity in surface imperfection specifications, and provides the context needed to properly specify surface imperfections using a variety of specification standards, and to evaluate a given optic to a particular level of surface imperfection specification. This is an OEOSC Accredited Course. Learn more and register here.

OEOSC Accredited Course: Optical Testing Standards You Can’t Afford to Ignore

SPIE PHOTONICS WEST – Wednesday, 21 January 2026 – 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM EDT

Standards foster communication with customers and build confidence in your products. Step up and beat your competition with a demonstrated and expert-maintained test method. This is an OEOSC Accredited Course. Learn more and register here.

All Courses Offered

We currently offer the following courses. They can be modified for the needs of your organization, and are shared with colleges and optics clubs at no charge. We are working on new courses in Materials, Laser Damage, Environmental Testing, Surface Form and Wavefront, and Optical Coatings. We are always looking for folks to help create, review, and deliver course material. Let us know if you have interest – there may be compensation.

SC01 – Understanding Scratch Dig

This course provides attendees with an understanding of the source of ambiguity in surface imperfection specifications and provides the context needed to properly specify surface imperfections using a variety of specification standards, and to evaluate a given optic to a particular level of surface imperfection specification.

SC02 – Advanced Surface Inspection Workshop

This hands-on workshop with allow attendees to learn the “Best Practice” for inspecting optical surfaces. The course has many demonstrations and labs and gives attendees lots of practice handling and inspecting optics with the oversight of a trained master inspector.

SC03 – Modern Optics Drawing

This course provides attendees with an introduction of ISO 10110, the international standard for optics drawings and notations. The course discusses the context of optics drawings and the fundamentals of the ISO 10110 drawing layout. It will also cover the tolerance notations for glass parameters, surface wave front, wedge, and surface texture and coating.

SC04 – Understanding Waviness and Roughness

The course begins by defining the terms and parameters used to control surface texture in the modern optical manufacturing world. It also covers the key factors associated with surface texture and roughness on optical surfaces, and how to understand their impact in optical system performance.

SC05 – Introduction to Optics Drawings

This course provides attendees with an introduction to ISO 10110, the international standard for optics drawing notations, and the American adaptation of it.

SC06 – A practical Guide to Specifying Optical Components

This course provides an overview of the basic principles, terms, and standards that are necessary for someone specifying optical elements.

SC07 – Optical Testing Standards You Can’t Afford to Ignore

This course introduces students to all ISO test methods for Optics and Photonics, categorized by technical topic.
